| PROJECT YOUTH DOC |
HISTORY
Project Youth Doc was launched in the summer of 2004 as a pilot program with eight students and has grown to involve over three dozen students each summer. The program is held at the historic Hollywood Theatre and 83 students have participated to date. The tuition for the program is $400 for a four-week course and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
Film Action expanded the Project Youth Doc program to the New Columbia housing project in summer 2008. To learn more, click here...

PROGRAM SPECIFICS
- Students age 13 to 15 years old are recruited from schools and non-profit organizations across the Portland Metro area.
- Students fill out an application form (available March 2008), provide samples of their creative work and submit recommendations from their teachers.
- The program runs for four weeks, Monday through Friday, for 5 hours per day.
- Students are guided by professional filmmakers through the entire process--from initial concept to final edit--but the students are responsible for all content and creative decisions.
- Students edit their films on professional editing software, Final Cut Pro.
- Each finished documentary runs from 7 to 10 minutes long.
- At the conclusion of Project Youth Doc, all projects are screened for the public at "Docupalooza."
SUCCESS STORIES
- In 2006 students scored their own films or selected original music composed by other teenagers at the Old Library Studio.
- Each "Docupalooza" screening has drawn an audience of several hundred viewers.
- Students have captured interviews with Mayor Tom Potter, coffee shop owners, the lead singer of The Shins, teachers, principals, Trimet executives, skateboarders, and their peers.
- Student and parent response to Project Youth Doc has been extremely positive.
