A League of Their Own (archive)

Series: Fashion in Film

This is part of Feminist March 2019

In 1992, director Penny Marshall made the world fall in love with an American pastime all over again, by focusing A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN on the incredible women’s baseball league that sprang up during WWII as male players were away fighting. Focusing on Oregon sisters Dottie Henson (Geena Davis) and her sassy baby sis Kit (Lori Petty), the two deal with their washed-up grouch of a coach (Tom Hanks, in one of his most quotable roles) and the team’s antics (including Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell) while they all try to show the country that they are truly amazing athletes.

For the fifth anniversary of the Fashion in Film series (and in conjunction with the Hollywood Theatre’s Feminist March), we welcome a special co-host to introduce the film: Emma Mcilroy, CEO of Wildfang, Portland’s own store dedicated to fearless women. From their iconic Wild Feminist line, to their collaboration with the Thorns women’s soccer team, this brand celebrates badass women just like the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the film. Fashion in Film host Eden Dawn and Mcilroy will kick off the screening with trivia, prizes, and why they chose this influential movie.
