15-year-old Holly (Sissy Spacek) lives alone with her father (Warren Oates) in a dead-end South Dakota town. When she begins to date the older, rebellious Kit (Martin Sheen), whose resemblance to James Dean she admires, Holly’s father becomes furious. After a conflict between Holly and her father erupts in murder, the young lovers go on the run. In the ensuing crime spree, they journey to the badlands of Montana, eluding authorities along the way.
