Once Upon a Time in the West

Series: Reverb & Seduction

For this special screening, there will be lobby entrance music from members of Portland spaghetti western music aficionados The Delines and Federale! Before the movie, programmer Collin Hegna (Federale) will lead a short discussion about the music of Maestro Ennio Morricone.

Once Upon A Time In The West is widely regarded as the greatest achievement in the Spaghetti Western genre. And indeed it is hard to find a paralleled level of scope and vision in any genre. After director Sergio Leone elevated the Spaghetti Western with the financial and artistic success of his “Dollars” trilogy, he was determined to move away from making westerns and branch into new territory; however, as composer Ennio Morricone recalls, “Paramount Pictures made him an offer it was impossible to refuse”.

Armed with a substantially larger budget than previous productions, Leone could now afford to assemble his dream cast of Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and a particularly leathery Charles Bronson. The result is an epic artistic triumph rivaled by few films ever. A feat further elevated by one of Maestro Ennio Morricone’s most memorable and compelling scores. A true opera of violence.
