Out Of The Past

35mm print! Plays as part of the I Wake Up Dreaming series, hosted by noir expert Elliot Lavine.

OUT OF THE PAST (1947) With a look of doom in his sad eyes, private detective Jeff Markham sets out to find Kathie, the mistress of ruthless mobster Whit Sterling. When he catches up with her in Mexico, he falls hopelessly in love and willingly winds up in her twisted web of manipulation. Back home, Jeff and Kathie plunge deeper into their own self-created world of love, deception, and murder, culminating in a cathartic explosion of erotic violence.

Inarguably one of the finest examples of post-war Hollywood noir, a beautifully crafted, emotionally demanding film whose haunting images will linger long in the memory. Starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas, Rhonda Fleming. Stunningly photographed by the dean of RKO cinematographers, Nicholas Musuraca and directed with optimum poetic style by Jacques Tourneur.
