"Winner of SXSW’s Documentary Spotlight Audience Award, THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN examines the life and work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers. The film follows his evolution from a son of the Old South — at one time even a staffer for arch-conservative Senator Jesse Helms — into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to claim their own truth. Maupin’s journey also serves as a nostalgic and poignant look at the evolution of San Francisco’s gay culture, which his bestselling series "Tales in the City" has celebrated over nine volumes since the 1970s.

"With help from his friends — including Neil Gaiman, Sir Ian McKellen, and Amy Tan, as well as Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis, who starred in the popular Channel 4/PBS miniseries version of "Tales in the City" — Maupin looks back on a life that embodies a quintessential “gay experience” of the late 20th century. Filmmaker and two-time QDoc alum Jennifer Kroot (TO BE TAKEI) captures the playful, poignant and laugh-out-loud funny perspective of a literary legend."—Laure Parsons
