A woman (Ellen Burstyn) begins to notice dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior of her 12-year-old daughter (Linda Blair). Meanwhile, a young priest (Jason Miller) doubts his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness. After his encounters with the young girl, the priest believes her to be possessed by a demon, and he contacts an elderly priest (Max Von Sydow) who realizes the need for a showdown with an old demonic enemy.
