Two testosterone-fueled adolescents (Diego Luna and Gabriel García Bernal) decide to escape their native Mexico City, and along the way pick up a mysterious married woman (Maribel Verdú) with whom they form an increasingly intense erotic and emotional bond. Both a critical and box-office sensation, the film not only confirmed Cuarón as one of Mexico’s most exciting contemporary auteurs, it also launched Luna and Bernal to international stardom and helped crystallize the hovering handheld style that cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki would take to dazzling new heights in his later, bigger-budget collaborations with the director.
The film won the award for Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival and García Bernal and Luna each took home the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor. It was a runner-up at the National Society of Film Critics’ Awards for Best Picture and Best Director and earned Cuarón his third Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay at the 2003 Academy Awards.

Han pasado 20 años desde aquel acierto cinematográfico que, justo con el paso del tiempo, se ha convertido en un clásico de la cinematografía mexicana. A Cuarón lo confirmó una de las miradas potentes recién iniciado el siglo; presentó a Maribel Verdú al mercado latino y convirtió a García Bernal y Luna en la dupla de la pantalla grande por antonomasia: los “Charolastras”, tal y como se denominan los personajes en la cinta, son hoy dos de los rostros más visibles en la industria tanto en México como en el extranjero.
Esta cinta es un road movie que deambula por diversos temas como el despertar sexual, las diferencias sociales, la Ciudad de México, la identidad y la amistad. Dos jóvenes amigos de diferentes estratos económicos se ven cautivados por la presencia de una española madura quien acepta acompañarlos a un viaje hacia una playa lejana y oculta en el sureste mexicano que se transforma en un detonante transformador para los tres.
