The Astral Projections collection comprises the entire Coos County library of 16mm films, films that were shown in schools, at home – heck, maybe even at parties. Their subject matter ranges from microbiology to space to interpersonal relationships to short narratives to long-form documentary to abstract art and beyond. These are films with purpose, dignity, and often a keen artistic eye. It’s strange to think that one day soon, even the best-preserved of these films will fade, unnoticed, into obscurity – and yet, they’ve survived several generations. Watching these films can sometimes feel like looking back through the memories of someone else’s life. Considered together, they portray an evolution of knowledge and aesthetic in part of the American consciousness. So join us on a trip through time, to a secret place beyond the internet.
